The Beacon Partnership is a small, hyperlocal project on the World's End Estate, delivered with our main partner, Family Friends, and in collaboration with local community groups, schools and the council. Its purpose is to learn how specialist legal advice can help people living in long-term or deep poverty move from crisis to lasting stability.
Five months in, Tilde, the project co-coordinator reflected on her last 5 months in her recent Linkedin Article. For me, it already shows what Nucleus's strategy looks like on the ground: advice that reaches people earlier, stays with them longer and prevents crises rather than only responding to them.
Our project manager's report is honest about how deep unmet need runs, even in one of the wealthiest boroughs in the country. Three lessons stand out:
For more than 50 years, Nucleus has provided access to justice through specialist advice in welfare benefits, housing and debt. Beacon tests how that expertise can work for people in deep poverty, in three ways:
James had limited mobility, damp and mould worsening his asthma, rent arrears and a water debt. A 2024 Occupational Therapy assessment had been lost, leaving him waiting two years for bathroom adaptations.
We tackled these problems together. After we escalated the damp and mould, the council completed remedial works. We re-referred his adaptations, which start on 9 November 2026. We connected him with debt advice, supported a Discretionary Housing Payment application and secured £499.99 towards a power wheelchair. Community referrals and our NHS App workshop have helped him live more independently.
Each problem was heading towards crisis. Joined-up support stopped it.
